Conscious sedation for Dental Treatments

Many of us have unfortunately experienced unpleasant episodes in the dental office in the past, leaving us with feelings of fear and anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist.

Through the process of conscious sedation in dental treatments, we aim to overcome this ancestral fear.

What does Conscious Sedation involve?

Essentially, the patient receives a series of medications, most commonly administered parenterally, to make them less aware of their surroundings. There are several methods to administer sedatives, with intravenous administration being one of the most effective, sometimes combined with oral medications, known as analgesosedation.

What are the differences between conscious sedation and general anesthesia?

Compared to general anesthesia, there are several significant differences. Firstly, the patient retains a certain level of consciousness; they are not asleep but experience altered perceptions of their surroundings and, to some extent, modified memories related to the medical procedure. Local anesthesia is often supplemented to maximize patient comfort, and the patient’s perception of the local anesthesia administration is also greatly altered.

The major advantage of conscious sedation is that the patient can collaborate with the physician, which is important for the efficiency and safety of the medical procedure. Additionally, the patient’s stress level significantly decreases. Another advantage of conscious sedation is related to patient recovery. In this case, the patient will not need to be hospitalized or spend at least a day in the hospital. However, they will only be able to drive once the anesthesiologist determines that it is safe to leave the clinic where the sedation was performed.

Conscious sedation is administered by the anesthesiologist, who has the necessary qualifications to establish the protocol for medication administration for this purpose. Additionally, throughout the entire medical procedure, the anesthesiologist will assist the patient to ensure extra comfort and safety.

In conscious sedation, various surgical procedures that do not necessarily require general anesthesia can be performed, such as multiple dental implants, bone reconstructions, and other surgical interventions. Often, it is not only possible but also recommended to conduct multiple procedures simultaneously. This way, a complete surgical rehabilitation of the oral cavity can be achieved in a single session.

We have introduced this treatment method to help our clinic’s patients feel as comfortable as possible during medical procedures and to overcome their fear of the dentist and dental interventions, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
