Patients in Oradea now have access to dental treatments under general anesthesia or conscious sedation under general anesthesia, introduced by the MaxiloMED Clinic, which encompasses all specialties of dental medicine under one roof.
For many, visiting the dentist can evoke an unpleasant feeling, often stemming from past experiences when treatment options were limited and enduring pain was sometimes necessary.
“Our desire is to provide solutions for as many people as possible, helping them overcome the unpleasant experiences they may have had in the past and to be able to enjoy an appropriate quality of life, which is why we also introduced this option for our patients.” – prof. univ. dr. Mihai Juncar
“Many patients postpone medical treatments due to fear, and unfortunately, this delay can complicate the treatment process. “We aim to avoid very complicated and numerous interventions to rehabilitate a case; the more procedures required, with that much is possible that something may not go well. Sadly, many patients have told us they avoided seeing a doctor because of their fear. We understand this, as we too have been and are patients, and we know that going to the doctor is not a pleasant feeling. However, postponing care leads to complications, and a case that may initially seem simple can become much more complicated.”
Together with our partners, we have introduced dental treatments under general anesthesia or conscious sedation under general anesthesia in Oradea. We have implemented these medical services, even though it is more challenging for the dentist to work under general anesthesia.
What is General Anesthesia?
General anesthesia is a method that induces a state of unconsciousness through the administration of anesthetic substances. In this state, the patient experiences a deep sleep-like condition and cannot cooperate with the physician performing the procedure.
For dental treatments under general anesthesia, it is essential to have an operating room equipped with all necessary facilities to safely complete the medical intervention.
What is Conscious Sedation?
Conscious sedation involves administering a series of medications, most commonly via parenteral routes, to make the patient less aware of their surroundings. There are several methods for administering sedatives, with one of the most effective being intravenous administration, sometimes combined with oral medication, known as analgesosedation.
Conscious sedation allows the patient to be relaxed and calm while remaining awake during the treatment. It is particularly used for simpler dental procedures, such as multiple dental implant placements and limited maxillary bone reconstructions, and is effective in reducing discomfort and anxiety.
The major advantage of this technique is that the patient remains conscious and can collaborate with us. At the same time, their perception of the surrounding environment is altered, which reduces stress and fear levels. Sedation is often combined with traditional local anesthesia, which is performed in any dental practice.
Differences between General Anesthesia and Conscious Sedation
The fundamental difference between general anesthesia and conscious sedation (or local anesthesia) is the state of unconsciousness induced by general anesthesia, which requires the surgical team to create their own access to the area being treated. For example, if certain interventions are needed in the oral cavity, a member of the surgical team must keep the patient’s mouth open throughout the procedure, which can sometimes complicate and prolong the medical act.
The advantages of general anesthesia are numerous, especially for extensive procedures or for patients with severe anxiety or other systemic health issues. In the case of dental treatments under general anesthesia, the patient is not aware of what is happening around them and, consequently, will not have memories related to the medical procedure. Additionally, general anesthesia allows for extensive interventions such as orthognathic surgery (to correct maxillary bone anomalies), trauma surgery, or oncology procedures. While smaller surgical procedures, such as dental implant placements or bone grafts, can also be performed, we prefer to conduct these interventions when the patient has a certain level of consciousness and can cooperate with us.
A major advantage of general anesthesia is the securing of the airway through the nasotracheal intubation tube. This significantly reduces the risk of the patient swallowing or aspirating a foreign body from the oral cavity.
For both conscious sedation and general anesthesia procedures, the patient is monitored by the anesthesiologist, who ensures that the intervention takes place under maximum safety conditions.
“While we have multiple options for complex oral rehabilitation treatments, it is recommended that patients attend regular check-ups, as it is simpler to prevent than to treat.”
